Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is MapleDrop?

MapleDrop is an efficient and secure cross-platform file transfer tool, a powerful open-source alternative to AirDrop. It allows you to quickly share files, folders, text messages, and clipboard content between Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux devices without cables.

Q2. Which platforms are supported?

Currently supports Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux. You can install MapleDrop on all these devices and transfer files between them.

Q3. How to send files within a LAN?

Ensure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and have the MapleDrop app open. On the "Send" page, you should see the recipient's avatar in the "Nearby Devices" list. Tap the avatar, select the files (or images, apps, text, etc.) to send, and wait for the recipient to confirm.

Q4. What if I can't find nearby devices?

1. Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi. 2. Ensure the recipient's app is open (some systems may restrict network access in the background). 3. Try tapping "Scan Devices" to refresh the list. 4. If still not found, try tapping the top right corner to manually enter the recipient's IP address and port number.

Q5. Still can't find devices even on the same Wi-Fi?

This may be due to network restrictions: 1. Router "AP Isolation" is enabled, preventing device communication. 2. Windows Firewall is blocking the connection (set network profile to "Private" instead of "Public"). 3. If using VPN or proxy software, try disabling it temporarily.

Q6. How to send files to friends not on the same LAN?

You can use the "Remote Transfer" feature: 1. Sender: Tap "Remote Transfer" on the "Send" page, select files, and a "Key" will be generated. Copy and send the key to your friend. 2. Recipient: Tap "Enter Remote Key" on the "Receive" page, paste the key, and connect. 3. Once connected, transfer begins (supports direct connection or server relay).

Q7. What is "Link Share"?

This allows sharing without the recipient installing the app. On the "Send" page, select "Share via Link". The app will start a temporary Web server and generate a link. The recipient just needs to open the link in a browser to download the file.

Q8. Browser says "Not Secure" when opening Link Share?

This is normal. Link Share uses a self-signed HTTPS certificate to ensure encrypted transfer. Browsers cannot verify self-signed certificates, so they warn of risk. Just click "Advanced" -> "Proceed (or Continue)".

Q9. How fast is the transfer?

LAN transfer: Depends on router performance and Wi-Fi signal, typically 5MB/s to 50MB/s+. Remote transfer: Depends on internet bandwidth. If direct connection fails and relay server is used, speed may be limited.

Q10. Is there a file size limit?

Theoretically, no limit. From KB-sized images to GB-sized HD movies, everything can be transferred.

Q11. Where are received files on Android?

By default, files are saved in the "MapleDrop" folder under your "Download" directory. Images and videos are usually automatically saved to the system gallery. If you can't find files, check settings to specify a save directory.

Q12. Why can't I find the APK I want to send on Android?

To optimize experience, we hide system apps and non-launchable apps by default. If you need to send these, go to the APK selection page, tap settings in the top right, and disable "Exclude System Apps".

Q13. What is VIP Membership? What are the privileges?

VIP is a paid value-added service offering: Exclusive VIP badge and colored nickname. Remove all in-app ads. Unlimited friend additions (Non-VIP limit: 3/day). Unlimited text messages (Non-VIP limit: 3/day). Unlock high-speed remote transfer channel.

Q14. What are the limitations for non-VIP users?

Basic file transfer (LAN/Remote) is unlimited. Limitations are mainly: Ads in the interface. Daily limit on adding friends and sending text messages (3 each).

Q15. How to buy VIP? What payment methods are supported?

VIP purchase includes monthly and annual subscriptions. A prompt will appear when limits are reached or when using remote friend transfer. Domestic users: WeChat Pay. Overseas users: Google Play, Apple Pay, and PayPal.

Q16. Can I use VIP on a new phone?

Yes. VIP benefits follow your account. Just log in with the same account on the new device, and benefits will sync automatically.

Q17. What if network disconnects during transfer? Resume supported?

If transfer is interrupted, the recipient keeps the received part. When retrying the same file, it attempts to resume from where it left off (depending on file integrity check).

Q18. Do files go through your servers? Is it safe?

LAN transfer: Completely P2P, no servers involved, absolutely safe. Remote transfer: Uses end-to-end encryption. Even if relayed through servers (when direct connection fails), servers cannot decrypt your files, only the recipient can.

Q19. How to customize the app appearance?

Go to "Settings" -> "General" -> "DIY Theme". You can: Switch Dark/Light mode. Change theme color. Set custom background image and blur. Adjust corner radius and transparency. Note: Non-VIP users need to watch an ad to unlock for 10 minutes.

Q20. What permissions does the app need? Why location?

Storage: To read/save files. Location (Android): Required by Android system to access Wi-Fi SSID for discovering local devices. We promise not to record your actual location. Nearby Devices: To discover devices via Wi-Fi Direct etc.

Q21. Why is transfer speed slow? Why Remote Transfer (Iroh) not direct?

Both depend heavily on router/network. For best experience: 1. Connect to 5G Wi-Fi: Wider bandwidth, less interference. 2. Enable IPv6: Iroh relies on IPv6 for NAT traversal. IPv6 significantly improves P2P success rate; otherwise, it may fallback to relay mode with limited speed.

Q22. How to change password or delete account?

Change password and delete account options are in the App Settings page within Settings.
